Here at Cammy, we often receive questions about home security from people just like you who want to better protect their home, family and possessions.
That’s our priority too, so we’ve compiled the 5 most common home security questions and answers to help you out:
1. How do most burglars break into a home?
Believe it or not, most burglars don’t even have to break in. Statistics show that 34% of burglars simply walk in through unlocked front doors, making it the most common entry point for burglars.
Meanwhile 23% of burglars climbed in through first floor windows and 22% used the back door to gain entry. So even if you’re leaving your home for a short period, make sure all the entry points to your home are secured.
2. What are some commonly stolen items?
According to a study conducted on 422 career burglars, 79% of burglars are interested in cash, 68% in jewellery, 58% in illegal drugs and 56% in electronics.
The best way to protect your money is by putting it in the bank and out of a burglar’s reach. However if this is not an option, read our blog post on the 10 worst places to hide valuables before choosing your hiding place. You can also consider installing a wall or floor-mounted safe in your home to protect valuables that are hard to replace like jewellery.
Burglars will always look for items that are quick to turn over and resell so it’s a good idea to mark your property to reduce the risk of your valuables being stolen.
3. What makes a house attractive to a burglar?
When selecting targets, burglars will look for signs of neglect such unmanaged yards and exteriors, high fences and lack of visible security cameras.
High fences not only attract burglars but also provide them with cover. Similarly, neglecting your yard and house exterior only goes to show that there’s nobody home and leaves more opportunity for someone to hide, especially if the plants conceal windows and doors.
Lack of visible security measures also makes your home attractive to burglars. In fact, homes without visible security cameras are 300% more likely to be targeted.
So all in all, be sure to regularly maintain your home and install visible security cameras to make your home less attractive to burglars.
4. How much do home security systems cost?
While you can purchase security cameras from retail stores, they’re simply not home security systems. They lack important features like person detected alerts, pan/tilt, 2-way audio, auto arm/disarm and monitoring. Without monitoring, your home is left vulnerable and it’s impossible to know who or what set off the alarm, leading to costly false alarm fines and guard send out fees.
On the other hand, comprehensive security systems from companies like ADT cost thousands of dollars but have additional features like 24/7 guard monitoring and regular security patrols. However, keep in mind that while you may not need these features, you would still be paying for them.
Alternatively, WiFi security systems are quick to set up, have low upfront costs and cost little to nothing to install. Monitoring starts from $14.50 a month and you can benefit from knowing you’ll be alerted if an intruder is trying to break in. There are a plethora of benefits with app-based monitoring systems including Live View which lets you see what’s happening at home from anywhere anytime, 2-way audio which lets you speak to your pets or loved ones and auto arm/disarm, just to name a few.
So when considering the cost of a home security system, be sure to compare features, upfront costs, installation costs and monitoring fees. More importantly, consider the likelihood of false alarms as they could lead to hundreds and thousands of dollars in fines.
5. What’s the best way to prevent break-ins?
According to the F.B.I, burglars are 2.7 times less likely to target homes with home security systems, making them the most effective way to prevent break-ins.
Not only do they make great burglar deterrents, some home security systems like Cammy can do so much more. You can rest easy knowing you’ll receive an alert on your smartphone if an intruder is detected. You can then switch to Live View to see what’s going on or tap to call the Police straight from the app. Peace of mind made easy!
