7. Eat a good meal
Prior to your big New Year’s Eve celebrations, remember to eat a good, filling meal. This will ensure that if you are drinking alcohol that night, the food will absorb some of the alcohol and you can stay sober for longer. Here are the best foods to eat before drinking.
6. Stay close to your friends and family
Celebrations are always best spent with family and friends and New Year’s Eve is no exception. If you’re going to a party or celebrating in a public space, make sure you arrive and depart together so everyone is always accounted for and safe.
This is especially important when the public space is very crowded as it’s easy to get separated from the group. Make sure you link arms or buddy up to stay safe.
5. Remember to pack a charger for your phone
Imagine counting down to the New Year:
…6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…Happy New Year!
Then you take out your phone to take a photo of the fireworks, only to realise you’ve run out of battery and lost your friends in the crowd!
In order to avoid disappointing situations like the above, make sure you pack a phone charger or external battery pack to make sure you’re connected at all times. This will ensure that if you get separated from your friends, you’ll be able to contact them and find them quickly.
4. If you’re drinking, pace yourself
When it comes to New Year’s Eve festivities, it’s hard to avoid alcoholic beverages. Even if you or your friends don’t drink, there will likely be someone nearby that becomes intoxicated so make sure you stay alert and aware.
If you are drinking alcohol, make sure you know your limits, alternate between water and alcohol and pace yourself. Also, make sure you never, ever leave your drink unattended.
3. Stay alert and aware
If you’re out and about during New Year’s Eve, make sure you stay alert and aware of your surroundings as things can quickly get out of control. If you’re in a situation where you feel uncomfortable, uneasy or vulnerable, there’s a high chance that you’re not safe. Get out of there, pronto!
2. Use public transport, Uber or taxis
By the time New Year’s Eve fireworks finish, it’ll be past midnight and you’ll be tired from all the festivities. Make sure you have transport arranged as fatigue-related crashes are twice as likely to be fatal.
More importantly, never drink and drive. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, January 1 is the number one day of the year with the highest percent of deaths related to alcohol. This day is also risky for your car if you leave it at home as car thefts increase during the first day of the year. Make sure you have an outdoor security camera pointed at your car for good measure!
1. Celebrate away from the crowds
If you’re planning to celebrate with family or simply wanting a quiet New Year’s Eve, it’s a good idea to celebrate away from the crowds, as things can get rowdy and there’s a chance your loved ones might get separated from you.
Consider having a dinner party, packing a picnic, celebrating at a restaurant, booking a New Year’s Eve cruise or watching the fireworks from a hotel room. There are many ways you can celebrate away from public spaces to stay safe during New Year’s Eve.
Hopefully, you can implement some of these tips to stay safe this New Year’s Eve! Enjoy your festivities and remember to stay alert and aware!
